Synopsis
European equity markets indicated to open higher, whilst Asian equities are lower Tuesday. Regional benchmarks logging mild declines with growth/tech/semis underperforming. Hong Kong-listed consumer shares under pressure following Temu-owner PDD's downbeat outlook. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Oil prices steady following Monday rally on Middle East tensions and Libyan output cut.
On today's agenda, EU's Ferreira speech at ERSA conf whilst Spain's PM Sánchez visits Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to discuss migration and aid (through Thu). UK PM Starmer keynote speech. In central banks, Hungary interest rate decision and Norges Bank's Gerdrup speech at 10:00CET. Bundesbank's Nagel in discussion at 16:00CET (livestream) and Netherlands Central Bank's Knot speaks at 12:45CET at EEA-ESEM (Mon-Fri).
September Fed rate cut widely expected debate has pivoted to whether it will be 25 bp or 50 bp move. Odds of 50 bp cut stand at ~30% as markets continue to price in ~100 bp of easing in final three meetings of the year. That has increased importance of August US payrolls (6-Sep) in shaping 25 vs 50 bp debate as Fed policy focus shifts more to preventing harder labor market slowdown.
Near-term focus is on NVDA's earnings, to be released after US market close on Wednesday. Expectations are high with markets anticipating another beat and raise. Options market positioning suggesting share price moves of 9-10% in either direction following the results with potential for swings in shares of Asian semis
In light corporate news flow, out of DACHs, Dermapharm Holding (DMP.GR), Sonova Holding (SOON.SW), Vaudoise Assurances Holding (VAHN.SW), and Flughafen Zuerich (FHZN.SW) are amongst other in the region to update investors with their latest numbers. In Benelux, Greenyard (GREEN.BB) reported strong Q1 revenue. Also, BHP Group (BHP.LN) reported FY earnings with results mostly in line with expectations and confirmed FY guidance.
