Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures pointing to opening gains in Australia while Hang Seng futures unchanged. Japan offline for public holiday. S&P 500 futures little changed. Bonds mixed with Australian and New Zealand yield curves flattening. Crude flat after logging best week since March. Gold continues to fluctuate. Bitcoin pulling back from weekend highs.
Japan equites pared most of Monday's historic sell-off over course of last week. Dip buying attributed to cheaper valuations, and sell-side discussions about near-term exhaustion of yen carry unwind and CTA-driven selling pressure. However, also thoughts recent upswing more a bear market rally, with volatility to persist amid catalyst vacuum. Some strategists have also warned yen positioning unwind has more room to turn.
Globally, markets soothed by factors such as pickup in Fed rate cut expectations, Fed pushback against hard landing concerns, and sell-side firms downplaying bear market talk. However, concerns remain over stressed US consumers, AI scrutiny and tech earnings disappointment, still-stretched systematic long positioning, valuations not far from their recent peaks and negative seasonality.
In weekend headlines, former BOJ board member Sakurai said he doesn't believe BOJ will hike again this year amid recent volatility and Japan economic growth headwinds. More China scrutiny on bond market with Reuters reporting brokers ordered to probe their bond trading activities. Fed Governor Bowman signaled caution about supporting rate cut due to above-target inflation.
